a look at a 2nd saliva sample
I haven’t posted in a while because I’ve been busy with other projects. But I didn’t want August to go by without a post, so I did the simplest sample I could think of: simply exhaling some breath onto a slide. I’ve seen other nano researchers suggesting this and so I decided to try it.
I immediately began looking at the sample after I breathed onto the slide. After about 15 minutes I noticed some branching networks starting to form outside of the cover slip. These patterns somewhat resemble the tube networks I saw in my first saliva sample some months ago. Still nothing showing in the cover slip area about 30 minutes in, though I’m sure something will develop over the next few days and weeks. Video below is approximately 400x magnification.
Now about another 10 or 15 minutes have passed since I uploaded the above video and I’m starting to see these branching networks spread onto the cover slip a bit. It’s hard to tell whether it’s above or under the coverslip. I think this is as far as I’ll take the observation tonight and will have another look tomorrow.
Update 8/20
It is now about 24 hours later since I recorded the video clip above. The sample looks exactly the same as it did last night. The area covered by these branching networks is very small, only a tiny portion of one side of the cover slip. A couple months ago I did my first saliva sample and found very large networks of branching tubes that covered at about half the area of the slide. These branching patterns I’m seeing now don’t appear to be fully formed tubes, but grow in roughly the same pattern as the “tubes”.
Here is one more video I recorded this evening just to confirm that it’s basically the same as what I saw yesterday.
Perhaps these networks didn’t grow as large or as fully developed as in the previous sample because I merely breathed vapor onto the slide instead of using a full drop of liquid. I’m sure that a full drop of saliva contains more of the tech than the few speckles that manage to come out from exhaling.
That’s all I have for now. I’ve been extremely busy but didn’t want the whole month of August to go by without a post. I intend to go shopping at the international grocery store again later this week and make it sort of like a fun little field trip to give me a motivational boost to dig deeper into more samples.
